The most significant DEX upgrade in years

Uniswap v4 has officially launched on Ethereum mainnet after more than 18 months of development and multiple security audits. The upgrade introduces two transformative architectural changes: a singleton contract design that consolidates all liquidity pools into a single smart contract, and a "hooks" system that allows developers to customise pool behaviour at key lifecycle points.

Understanding hooks

Hooks are external smart contracts that Uniswap v4 calls at specific points during a pool's lifecycle — before and after swaps, before and after liquidity changes, and before and after pool initialisation. This programmability effectively turns Uniswap into a platform rather than a fixed protocol, enabling use cases such as dynamic fees, on-chain limit orders, time-weighted average market makers (TWAMMs), and custom oracle implementations.

Over 200 hook contracts have already been deployed or are in active development, according to the Uniswap Foundation's ecosystem dashboard. Notable implementations include MEV-capture hooks that redistribute extracted value to liquidity providers, and KYC hooks for compliant institutional pools.

Gas savings

The singleton architecture reduces pool creation gas costs by approximately 99% compared to v3, as new pools no longer require deploying separate contracts. Swap gas costs are reduced by 7–15% depending on the complexity of the trade. These savings are expected to make Uniswap competitive with layer-2 native DEXes on cost grounds for the first time.

LP revenue outlook

Liquidity providers face both opportunity and complexity under v4. Dynamic fee hooks can increase returns in volatile markets by automatically adjusting fees based on volatility oracles. However, the proliferation of hook contracts introduces new smart contract risk vectors that LPs must evaluate before depositing capital.
